Lac Duong Community Hall

One big roof for village meetings, gong festivals and evening classes. The louvres stop the afternoon sun and let the wind through.

A long hall with a steep dark roof and walls of close vertical pine louvres, seen across a rammed earth yard in late afternoon, the sun low behind it and warm light glowing through the slats, pine hills beyond.

The 540 m² hall serves three neighbouring villages. The floor is rammed earth so a fire can be lit in the middle for ceremonies. Pine louvres, 40 x 90 mm at 120 mm centres, are open enough for the breeze and dense enough to block the western sun.

The timber was heat-treated at 210 °C instead of with chemicals, which turns it brown and means it never needs repainting. In five years six louvres have been replaced, all by carpenters from the villages.
